Congratulations and best of luck to all Griffith College media faculty’s 19 individuals and groups nominated in 13 categories for this year’s Smedias – The Annual National Student Media Awards.

Particular congrats due again this year to our photography department, with students nominated in all three Smedias photography categories. Special mention due to Tiberio Ventura who has had his photographic work nominated in the Smedias in every year throughout his three year BA in Photography degree here at Griffith College and has been nominated now for a fourth year in a row, having made the progression on to the final year of the BA (HONS) in Journalism & Visual Media. His photo Southside Shadows is shown above.

Griffith media students are, as usual, very well represented too in the journalistic writing categories – taking 25% of the available nominations throughout the seven categories involving magazines, blogs, news and sports writing.

Special mention too goes to Ellie O’Byrne, third year BA in Journalism student at Griffith College in Cork, who is nominated in two categories: Journalist of the Year – National Press, and Radio Documentary of the Year. Ellie was also shortlisted in the Small College Publication of the Year category for The Lanterns Samhain.

Yet again this year Griffith TV and Film students dominate the running, again taking 75% of nominee places. Griffith radio production and documentary students again have a strong presence in the finals with 20% of nominee places.

Final year BA in Journalism student and candidate for this year’s Students’ Union President, Walaa Ajjawi was shortlisted for the European Commission Award.

Nominees will be heading to the Aviva in Dublin 4 on Thursday 16th April for the gala awards ceremony where media celebrities will present wards in each category.

Fingers crossed.
