Syrian crisis debated in Griffith

RTE’s Anthony Murnane at the Griffith Syria debate 21st March

Nearly 50 Griffith students and staff attended a meeting on the crisis in Syria yesterday, 21st March. They heard gripping first hand accounts of the human rights abuses and attacks on civilians in the state.

Organised by Griffith College radio lecturers Anne Daly, John O’Donovan and Pat Proctor, there were presentations from RTE’s Anthony Murnane, International Politics lecturer Dr Vincent Durac from UCD, Griffith’s own Ronan Brady, Barry McCall from the NUJ and Amnesty International representative Noeleen Hartigan.

The  tone of the evening was set by Dr Hassan Rajab who described systematic episodes of  brutal oppression, violence and torture routinely carried out  by the Syrian Government. His contribution framed much of the debate of the meeting as participants discussed the critical role that journalists and the news media can play in reporting on human rights issues both in Ireland and internationally.
